Lolita has never been more global. In the age of social media, fashion enthusiasts all around the world can be on the lookout for new releases they love no matter where they come from. I recently had the opportunity and pleasure of working with Cats and Bunny head designer Iréndira Medina (@nekopan87), modeling for her Brand new Old Memories Jumper skirt now in preorder, in eight different colorways featuring black, white, wine and blue.

A Lolita since 2010, Ire is a seasoned veteran of events and communities who originally started creating her own dresses because it was very complicated and expensive to get her hands on some of the pieces she desired.

Cats and Bunny is a beloved lolita brand that I have known of since I began wearing the fashion, so I naturally jumped at the opportunity of modeling and shooting two of her most recent creations. I have always admired the discipline and love needed to create your own pieces and Ire is not an exception. She told me her love of Lolita and Jfashion stems from the confidence it can give the person who chooses to wear it. What I like the most, she said, is how we have to express ourselves without caring who will criticize us. We can be who we really are, facing society or sometimes even people within the fashion with our head up high.

She speaks in an amicable fashion, her round glasses catching the light as she adjusts her blue headdress. The outfit she wore for the shooting and interview, she also made it herself. Donning matching tones of blue, floral and classic, she gestures with her hands as she explains how her brand was born. “It was a very spontaneous thing. It was born of the motivation of creating these dresses I saw on the internet that made me fall in love with the fashion and seemed so unreachable. I have no formal training as seamstress or designer, so I had to begin from scratch and by trial and error I kept improving. If someone had told me I would make the jumper skirt you are wearing right now I wouldn’t have believed it, then.”

I asked, also, how it was back then in 2010. I entered the fashion four years later, when truthfully it was a lot easier to find access not only to the clothes themselves but also information on how to make your own coordinate and references of others wearing the style. “There were no shopping services. Taobao wasn’t known in the Lolita community. Brand was expensive and difficult to get to. The easiest solution seemed to make the clothes myself.”

Back then, the landscape was very different here in Mexico City. “I met some of the former heads of communities here in the city. Many of them don’t wear the fashion anymore, at least publicly. I wore lolita from 2010 to 2012 before I started dreaming of creating my own brand.”

Her inspiration comes from varied places. In her own words, she told me; “Its usually something not as specific. It can be coming from a film in which the costume gives me ideas, other times I just find a gorgeous, inspiring fabric and that in itself inspires me. And, my favorite, flowers. Actually, I am planning on creating an entire collection of dresses showcasing different flowers. Every dress, in a way, is part of me. It comes from my own passion and preferences.”

We conversed, too, about what does she think about the local scene as of today. Is it growing? Some of her thoughts on the subject are; “I definitely think it is growing. What I sense, though, is that communities aren’t considered necessary for enjoying Lolita anymore. There are many “solitary Lolitas”, and I keep seeing new faces in every event.”

My next to the last question had to do with handmade and if people trust indie brands more now, and how are these brands positioned against Japanese clothes themselves. “People buy handmade much more these days. The initial rejection local brands faced in the beginning is now mostly gone and the growth of other Asian brands has helped increase the trust and image of handmade clothes. Nowadays there are many girls who do an impressive job with a reasonable price, for instance, Haenuli. She started small and her fearlessness in defying the traditional themes and silhouette have made her famous in the international scene. As a designer, seeing all those brands experimenting and bringing down prejudices, inspire you to try new things yourself. You try and make dresses you thought were crazy and it makes you raise your standards in matters of quality and design, everything.”

We concluded the interview talking about local brands in Mexico and their growth. “There are also more Mexican indie brands. It is something I really enjoy seeing because each one has their own unique style. Some have even made their own prints, some brands make accessories and shoes…And the local market also buys locally, which is helping the brands grow in popularity and, in consequence, in quality as well.”

I can only say I will continue to showcase some of the great Mexican brands hoping to get their fantastic work out in the world and, hopefully, making a difference for some of the brand owners such as Iréndira, whose longtime dream was to see Cats and Bunny in Kera Magazine.
Find me in ig as @chailattelolita, and Cats and Bunny designer as @nekopan87, and her brand in FB @catsbunny.
