Few events in Mexico City have the beautiful diversity of styles and outfits as Harajuku Festival. Organized in Palacio Videmar, it is always an interesting showcase of recent and older brands showing a robust variety of different j-fashion options. This year’s theme was Retox Detoxxx, a runway taking inspiration from the 80’s and fusing it with kawaii fashion resulting in inspiring pastel and gothic looks great for a more practical, streetwear style.
メキシコシティで行われるイベントの中で、「原宿フェスティバル」ほどカラフルで多様なスタイルと洋服を見ることができるイベントはないでしょう。パラチオ・ビデマールで開催されるこのイベントは、さまざま違ったジャパニーズファッションが見られ、新しいブランドも懐かしいブランドも一堂に会する面白いショーケースなのです。今年の「原宿フェスティバル」のテーマは「レトックス・デトックス Retox Detoxxx」ということで、80年代とカワイイファッションを融合させ、より実践的でストリートでも着られるパステル調とゴシック調のスタイルがランウェイに様々登場しました。

It’s not a usual occurrence, at least not in my experience, to see lolitas alongside other Harajuku fashions, which is why this Festival is always one of my favorite events of the year. Ximena, the organizer, has done a great job creating a fashion experience for those who like me who don’t like when j-fashion is simply an addition to cons focusing on anime or cosplay. I had the opportunity to speak to her recently and these are some of her impressions:
ロリータファッションと他の原宿ファッションがいっしょに並んでいるなんて、少なくとも私の経験では、そんなにいつもある事ではないので、それだけでもこのフェスティバルは、私のお気に入りのひとつなのです。オーガナイザーのシメナもすごくいい仕事をしてくれました。ジャパニーズファッションってアニメやコスプレの一種なんでしょ、なんて思われたくないって思う人たち、私もそうだけれど、そんな人たちがファッションを体験できる場を作ってくれました。そのシメナと最近、私は話をする機会があって、その時彼女は、次のようなことを言っていました。

“My husband and I have a clothing brand called Koi Ni Buta, focused on designing clothes and accessories inspired on alternative fasnion, such as Decora, Fairy Kei, Sukeban, Menhera, Uchuu Kei and others. And as we started to look for a proper selling event or location, we couldn’t find one so we decided to organize a more niche festival were we could contact more directly with our audience and improve our sales.”
「私と私の夫はいっしょに、コイ・ニ・ブタというブランドを展開していて、デコラやフェアリー系、スケバン、メンヘラ、宇宙系などなどオルタナティブファッションに刺激された洋服やアクセサリーをデザインしています。いつもそういった私たちのデザインを売るのにぴったりな場所やイベントがないか探していたのだけれど、見つからなくてね、だから私たちでニッチなフェスティバルを作ってしまえと思ったの。そうすれば私たちのデザインを気に入ってくれる人たちと直接会うこともできるし、売り上げも伸びると思ったのよ。」

I also asked her, out of my own curiosity, why and how do they pick a theme for the event and she told me:

“During each event, we want to have different themes that include and attract our varied audience, on the runway and off it, inspiring everyone to bring their best outfit. We want to help them experiment with new styles and create new tendencies, while also creating an inclusive and fun community among different substyles.”
それから彼女に、どうやって、また、どんな理由でイベントのテーマを決めているの、って質問をしたのですが、それに対して彼女は以下のように答えてくれました。
「それぞれのイベントに、違ったテーマがほしいといつも思っているの。ランウェイでもそれ以外でも、大事なお客さんたちが魅力的だと思ってくれるもの、そしてみんなが思いっきり自分らしさを出せるようなテーマを見つけるの。みんなには新しいスタイルや新しい流行に挑戦してほしいと思っているし、私たちはそれを助けたいと思っている。違ったスタイルの人たちもみんながいっしょになれる、包括的で楽しいコミュニティを作れるように心がけているのよ」For the lolita community in particular, I was happy to see the same people I saw about four years ago when I started in the fashion among my new friends, and seeing all of them rocking some of the coolest outfits I have ever seen. After its second anniversary, I hope Harajuku Festival will continue to challenge us to be creative, to have fun and to learn to interact with other communities for a very long time.
ロリータコミュニティだけを取り上げれば、4年前、私が新しい友人たちとこのファッションを始めたとき、その時からの友人たちに会うことができるのがとてもうれしい。その友人たちが、見たこともないようなクールな洋服で最高にロックしているのを見るのがうれしいのです。この「原宿フェスティバル」も次の3回目もそれ以降も、私たちがクリエイティブになれて、楽しく、他のコミュニティの人たちとも相互にいろいろ学べるような、そんなチャレンジを与えてくれることを願います。そしてそれがいつまでも続くように…Photography credit:
