In the world of kawaii fashion and art, there has been an artist that has reached global recognition and popularity: Japanese fashion illustrator and print designer, Kira Imai. Kira has exhibited her beautiful fashion art throughout the world in Paris, Barcelona, London, and Los Angeles. She is well known for her sweet and colorful prints for Japanese lolita brand Angelic Pretty, producing popular designs like “Cat’s Tea Party” and “Charlotte’s Bear”. Kira was invited to be a part of Tekko’s Japanese fashion and cultural program in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, presenting her upcoming designs in an Angelic Pretty fashion show on an interstellar runway. She even hosted an open forum discussion with attendees in a Question and Answer Panel format.
かわいいファッションとアートの世界で、その名前が世界中に知られ、人気者となっているアーティストがいます。それは日本のファッション・イラストレーター、プリントデザイナーである今井キラさんです。キラのとても美しいファッションアートは、パリやバルセロナ、ロンドン、ロサンゼルスなど世界中で紹介されています。彼女のスイートでカラフルなプリント柄のデザインは日本の有名なロリータブランドAngelic Prettyで採用され、「Cat’s Tea Party」や「Charlotte’s Bear」などの人気デザインを生み出してきました。彼女は今回、ペンシルバニア州ピッツバーグで行われた日本ファッションと文化イベントTekkoに招かれ、星をかたどったランウェイでのAnglelic Prettyで扱うこれからのデザインを披露しました。彼女はまた、質疑応答パネルを持った参加者とオープンな雰囲気で討議を行うイベントも主宰してくれました。

Q: How did you start out at Angelic Pretty?
A: I originally worked as a postcard illustrator for Angelic Pretty. For almost 20 years, many of the lolita fashion illustrations have been done by me. Lately, I have been collaborating more in the textile design process every year.

Ｑ：Angelic Prettyでの仕事はどんな風に始まったのですか？
Ａ：元々、Angelic Prettyのポストカードを描くイラストレーターをしていました。約２０年間、ずいぶんたくさんのロリータファッションのイラストを描いてきました。コレボレーションで毎年、テキスタイルを担当するようになったのは最近のことです。

Q: What are the stories behind each of the girls that you draw in your postcards?
A: Each girl in my artwork has her own background story, but I like to see the art trigger the imagination of an individual, so it is up to them to conjure up a story in their mind.

Ｑ：ポストカードに描く女の子、そのひとりひとりの背景にはどんなストーリーがあるのですか？
Ａ：イラストのそれぞれの少女には、ひとりひとりに背景となる物語が存在します。でも、私としては、皆さんそれぞれにイラストをきっかけにして想像力を働かせ、各々の心の中で物語を紡ぎだしてもらいたいと思っているのです。

Q: Can you tell us the story behind your current upcoming print “Unbirthday”?
A: For fashion girls, every day is a celebration. We want the girls who enjoy lolita fashion
to celebrate every day as if it was their birthday, hence the name “Unbirthday”. Birthdays are not just once every 365 days; every day that fashion is celebrated can be a party day too. I will be showing this new print in Tekko’s fashion show today.

Ｑ：あなたがデザインした「Unbirthday」という最近のプリント柄、この背景にあるストーリーを教えてください。
Ａ：ファッションが好きな女の子にとっては、毎日がお祝いです。ロリータファッションを楽しむ女の子たちに、毎日をまるでそれぞれの誕生日のようにお祝いして、楽しんでもらいたいという思いです。だから、「Unbirthday」ということにしました。Birthdayは365日、1年に一回来るものではなく、ファッションを楽しむ日はどんな日もパーティーの日なんだって。今日これから、このデザインをTekkoでお披露目します！

Q: Is there someone that you work with that you admire the most?
A: Angelic Pretty’s Maki. When we collaborate, I would create the print pattern and surface design, and Maki would create the form and fit of the dress. I can totally trust Maki’s design.

Ｑ：一緒に仕事をしている人で最も尊敬する人はどなたですか？
Ａ：Angelic Prettyのマキさん。コラボの時、わたしがデザインするのはプリント柄で、表面のデザインです。ドレスの形を作っているのはマキさんです。彼女のデザインには全面的な信頼を寄せています。

Q: Has Angelic Pretty given you any constraints and limitations on your print designs?
A: Aside from avoiding overlapping designs with the ones to be sold at the same time, I have been given a lot of freedom in my art. I have been working with the people at Angelic Pretty nearly for 20 years, so I have a trusting relationship with this team.
Ｑ：Angelic Prettyが、これまでにあなたのプリントデザインにダメ出しや制限を与えたことはあるのですか？
Ａ：デザインを同時期に発売になるものと被らないようにする、ということ以外は、わたしのイラストには自由にやらせてもらっています。Angelic Prettyの皆さんとはもう20年近く仕事してきていますから、チームとは信頼関係ができているのです。

Q: What music do you listen to when drawing art?
A: I listen to music without lyrics to help me concentrate. I do my initial draft drawings with intense concentration. My initial drawings are usually done in the middle of the night with no phone or doorbell interruptions and also a nice cup of caffeinated tea. Once the artwork is transferred to the computer work, then I can listen to any type of music or English dramas (currently “Criminal Minds”) to help me learn English.

Ｑ：イラストを描いているときに、どんな音楽を聴きますか？
Ａ：集中するために歌詞のない音楽を聴きますね。最初の草案を描くときはすごく集中力が必要なんです。描き出しはたいてい、夜中で電話やドアベルに邪魔されない時間を選んで、おいしいカフェインがしっかりきいた紅茶を用意して挑みます。アートワークをコンピューター作業に切り替えた後は、どんなタイプの音楽でも大丈夫です。もしくは英語習うために、英語のドラマをかけっぱなしにしたりしています（最近は、「クリミナル・マインド」で勉強しています。）

Q: Is there any upcoming projects and collaborations you are releasing next?
A: I have been collaborating with a traditional box maker in Kyoto, making jewelry boxes that are going to be released soon. Some look like books, while others are in a unique tubular form.

Ｑ：次にリリースするプロジェクトやコラボ企画はありますか？
Ａ：京都の箱作りの会社とコラボして、ジュエリーを入れる箱を作っているんです。それがすぐにリリースされます。本のように見える箱のデザインと、それから筒状のデザインのものです。

Q: What is the current theme you are working on for the future?
A: Next month I am working on a theme called “Heart’s Parlor”, it is lolita fashion but a bit more stylish and closer to the gothic themes. It’s a different style from my usual; I want to integrate my style in another direction, more dark and spooky.

Ｑ：将来のリリースのために温めているテーマはありますか？
Ａ：来月、「Heart’s Parlor」というテーマで取り組んでいるものがあります。ロリータファッションというよりはややスタイリッシュで少しだけゴシックに寄せたものです。いつものデザインとは違ったスタイルになりますね。今年は少しダークで奇妙な方向の作品作りにも取り組みたいと思っているのです。
