On 6/28/2019, I attended Akon, one of Texas’ most exciting conventions, with a premier fashion program featuring the global kawaii brands “Hyper Core”, “Hard Decora”, and “Baby the Stars Shine Bright”. After participating in their fashion show and listening to designer panels, I got the chance to have a one-on-one interview with the talented American designer of “Hard Decora”, Kamilah Jones, on the historic campus of Fair Park Dallas. Her mesmerizing fashion show featured an original sound track by Afro Shoujo with colorful models strutting down the runway accompanied by fun decoden bats and toy guns. During the interview, Kamilah told me about the origins of “Hard Decora” and the message she wants to spread across the global kawaii fashion world:
去る6月28日、テキサスで最も活気があるコンベンションのひとつ、Akonに行ってきました。そこで行われたプレミアなファッションプログラムには、世界的なカワイイブランド、「Hyper Core」や「Hard Decora」そして「Baby the Stars Shine Bright」が参加。私も彼らのファッションショーやデザイナーさんたちのパネルディスカッションに参加した後、フェア・パーク・ダラスという歴史的な場所で、今アメリカで最も才能があるハード・デコラのデザイナー、カミーラ・ジョーンズさんにインタビューすることができました。彼女のうっとりするようなファッションショーでは、Afro Shoujoによるオリジナルのサントラがかかり、楽しいデコ電コウモリやおもちゃの銃をもったさまざまな人種のモデルさんたちランウェイを飾りました。インタビューの中で、カミーラは「ハード・デコラ」の起源と、世界中のカワイイファッションを好きなファンの方々に伝えたいメッセージを教えてくれました。

Q: Your Akon fashion show was an impressive mix of sounds, colors and art concepts. I enjoyed your fashion show immensely; it brought the audience such joy! Can you tell me more about your current runway collection at Akon and the inspiration behind it?
Ｑ：　あなたのAkonファンションショーは、音楽、色彩、そしてアートコンセプトがミックスされてとても印象的でした。すごく楽しみました。観客の人たちもとても喜んでいましたのよね。そのAkonでのランウェイ用のコレクションとそれらを生み出したインスピレーションについて教えて下さい。

A: My newest collection is based on an illustration project called “Inktober”, where every day for a month I illustrated a kawaii weapon. People really liked it, so I added these to my clothing and accessory designs. I plan to do more with my drawings later in the year.
Ａ：　最新のコレクションは、「Inktober」と私が呼んでいるイラストプロジェクトが元になっていて、その中で1か月間、毎日ひとつ、カワイイ武器のイラストを描くって決めたのね。周りの人がすごく気に入ってくれて、それで私の洋服のデザインやアクセサリーのデザインにもそれを取り入れてみたの。今年の後半にももっと描く予定ではいるわ。

Q: Can you tell me more about your brand origin and its concept?
Ｑ：　ブランドが出来上がったきっかけとコンセプトを教えてください。

A: I started my brand and illustrations in college for my senior project. I looked online
through Tumblr for different inspirations. I saw a single image of a person in Harajuku wearing a colorful pastel outfit with a gas mask and a toy gun as a purse. I thought, “Wow this is such a story! What if there was a Harajuku girl gang that would protect people that were different?” Then I thought about what characters would be in this colorful fashion girl gang. I illustrated these characters and later printed them onto apparel and different items. People responded very well to it, so I continued in this direction. Lolita Collective noticed my work at a convention, and later helped me with travel and distributing it throughout the country. My motto “Be Aggressively Cute”, means being confident about what you wear. We should not have to shrivel away from standing out; we should be who we are even if people stare. I am now oblivious to stares.
Ａ：　大学の4年時にイラストを始めたんですね。Tumblrをいろいろ見て回ってインスピレーションになってくれるものを探したの。その中に、原宿でガスマスクとつけて、おもちゃの銃をバッグ代わりに持って、すごくカラフルなパステル調の洋服を着ている子の写真を一枚見つけたのね。「これってすごい物語性がある！」って思ったのよ。原宿に女の子のギャングがいて、人と違ったファッションをする人々を守っているなんて言うのはどうだろうってね。それから、そんなカラフルなファッションに身を包んだ女の子のギャングはどんな性格をしているのだろうって考えた。

Q: What is your background in art and how did you ended up becoming a designer?
Q:　アートを学んできた背景を教えてください。どんなふうにしてデザイナーになったのでしょうか？

A: I went to school for illustration and graduated from Columbia College Chicago. I did an internship for Marvel Entertainment and thought I was going to be working in the comic industry one day. One summer at the Marvel media department, I had to create clothing mock-ups using characters they had. This gave me practice in placing illustrations onto garment designs. Though I originally thought of myself as an illustrator, this experience helped me tie in my art with fashion design.
A:　イラストを大学で学び、シカゴのコロンビアカレッジを卒業しました。マーベル・エンターテインメントでインターンをしたこともあったので、いつか漫画の業界で働くのだろうなって思っていました。マーベルのメディア課にいたときのある夏、彼らが持っていたキャラクターで洋服のサンプルを作らなくてはならなくなったのですが、この時に布地のデザインの上にイラストをのせる練習をしたんです。自分のことはイラストレーターだと思っていましたが、この経験がファッション・デザインに自分のアートを融合させるために役立っています。

Q: Your clothing line and illustrations depict bold characters doing various things. Can you tell me more about these characters and what they represent?
Q:　あなたの服のラインとイラストは、大胆なキャラクターがさまざまなことをしている姿を描いていますよね。そのキャラクターたちについてもう少し教えていただけますか？　彼らは何を表しているのですか？

A: There is a character in my “Try Me” and “Sweet Therapy” collections, her name is Kamikaze. Her fashion style is Yami Kawaii and Menhera Kei. She is a sweet character but will defend herself when needed. Lolita is very popular in western kawaii fashion. So in my lolita inspired shirts, is a lolita character that I envisioned as the leader of my colorful fashion girl gang. As the leader, she represents maturity and wisdom, I find in lolitas.
A:　私の「Try Me」と「Sweet Therapy」のコレクションには、カミカゼという名前のキャラクターが出てきます。彼女のファッションスタイルは、ヤミカワイイのとメンヘラ系です。彼女は優しいキャラなのですが、必要となれば自分のことは自分で守ることができます。ロリータは西洋のカワイイファッションの中でも人気なので、私のロリータに触発されたシャツのデザインに、私のカラフルなファッションガールのギャング団のリーダーで、ロリータなキャラクターがいてもいいなと考えたのです。リーダーとして、彼女は私がロリータの中に見る、成熟と知恵を代表しているんです。

Q: Is there any items that you recommend for people wanting to start in Decora fashion?
Q:　デコラファッションを始めたいと思っている人たちに、何かお勧めのアイテムはありますか？

A: Definitely clips, they can make anything Decora. Even for those who don’t have the clothing yet, having a lot of accessories (necklace, bracelets, clips) can contribute to the Decora look. Then once you have the clothing, your accessory set will be complete.
A:　クリップは絶対よね。それがあればなんでもデコラにできるから。まだそれ系の洋服はもっていなくても、アクセサリー（ネックレスやブレスレットやクリップ）を沢山つけることによって、デコラっぽい感じは出せますよ。それから洋服を手に入れれば、それでアクセのセットも完璧になるじゃない。

Q: What is your view of diversity in the world of kawaii fashion?
Q:　カワイイファッションの世界における多様性をどのように見ていらっしゃいますか？

A: We definitely need more help with this in terms of the fashion community as a whole. As active members in the kawaii fashion community, we know different types of people do exist in this fashion and rock the clothes as well. Main stream people often don’t realize all different types of people do this fashion. This leads to random people leaving comments like “black people don’t do this” and other rude and untrue comments about our fashion. We need to work on spreading the word and image of different types of people doing fashion and also try to actively follow different types of people on social media other than our usual groups. This will open your horizons to seeing all types of people and make others more aware as well.
A:　ファッションコミュニティ全体を見ても、もっとこういったことの支援が必要だと、それはもう絶対です。カワイイファッションコミュニティで活動するひとりとして、このファッションの中にさまざま違ったタイプの人々が存在することを知っていますし、その人たちがかっこいい服をどんどん生み出していることも知っています。主流派の人たちは、こういった違ったタイプの人たちがこのファッションを支えていることを知らないのだと思います。このことで人々が「黒人さんはこんなファッションはしない」だとか、私たちのファッションに関して無礼で、真実ではないコメントを寄せたりもします。私たちはさまざま違ったタイプの人々が私たちのファッションを支えてくれているというイメージと言葉をもっと広げていく必要があると思っていますし、いつもの友人たちだけでなく、さまざま違ったタイプの人たちをSNSでフォローするといったこともしています。そうすれば見えている景色が変わっていきますし、いろいろなタイプの人々が見えてきて、そういったことの認識も高まるのだと思います。

Q: Do you have any advice for aspiring artists that want to start their own brand?
Q:　自分のブランドを始めたいと思っている、これからのアーティストに何かアドバイスをいただけますか？

A: Definitely start with a theme. Determine what the message and look of your brand is. When a brand has an overall message, you will be able to easily explain it to others. Customers will understand it and know what they are getting exactly. Before putting out any product, you need to know what direction your brand is going in.
A:　あるテーマを持つこと。これが絶対。メッセージを決めて、ブランドの見え方を決めること。ブランドに全体的なメッセージができると、人にそれを伝えるのがずっと簡単になっていくの。お客様もそれを理解してくれるし、手にするものがなんであるかちゃんと分かってくれる。何か製品を作る前に、自分のブランドがどこに行こうとしているのか、それを把握しておく必要があるのよね。

Q: What trends would you like to see more of?
Q:　これからのどんなトレンドをもっと見ていきたいと思っていますか？

A: I really enjoy looking at military Lolita styles. They are usually in darker colors, but I want to see what they would look like in bright colorful pastels. I would love to try to make a printed Lolita dress one day!
A:　ミリタリーのロリータスタイルを楽しみにしている。本当に。多くのものは暗めの色なのだけれど、私はそういった流れの中にもっと明るい、カラフルなパステル調の色を見てみたいと思っている。いつかプリントしたロリータのドレスも作ってみたいと思っているんですよ。

Q: What are upcoming projects that we can expect from Hard Decora in the near future?
Q:　近い将来ハードデコラからどんなプロジェクトが生まれてきますか？　どんなことが期待できますか？

A: I have a sample of my 1st comic arriving in the mail when I get home. This features all the characters on my shirts and readers will get to know these characters the way I know them. This will bridge a connection to my fashion line. Once the sample print looks good and is approved, I might put it out in the next coming months.
A:　これから家に帰ると、最初のコミックのサンプルが家の届いるはずなの。このコミックには、私のシャツに出てくるキャラクターが全部出てきていて、読者の方々にも私が知っているようにそう言ったキャラクターを知ってもらえるのよ。サンプルのプリントの具合が良ければ、承認が取れれば、来月か再来月くらいに発表できると思います！
