I recently visited the southern part of America at A-Kon (Dallas, TX) to model for their alternative fashion show case. Before hitting the runway, I was able to get a behind the scenes glimpse and interviews with the amazing American designers presenting that weekend. I started by listening to the incredible fashion stories of New York based designer, Kelsey VonCastle:
この間、アメリカの南部を訪ね、A-Kon（テキサス州ダラスなんだけど）で彼らのオルタナティブファッションのショーケースでモデルをする機会があったのね。ランウェイに出る前に、舞台裏を訪ね、その週末のショーに参加していたすばらしいアメリカのデザイナーたちをインタビューする機会があったの。まず、ニューヨークをベースに活躍するケルシー・ファンキャスルのものすごくためになるファッションに関する話を聞いてください。

Q. How did you come up with the name of your brand and what is the concept behind it?
Ｑ：このブランドの名前はどうやって思いついたの？その裏にあるコンセプトはどんなものですか？
A. I grew up in Florida so there are southern influences. The idea also came about as a royal proclamation, because it always included themes of royalty and majesty that accompanies the designs. The concept started with a royal theme and evolved into embodying your own power in what you wearing and giving yourself confidence that way. I think of I DO DECLARE as clothing and armor against the world.
Ａ；私、フロリダ出身なのよ。だから南部の影響があるのは確か。それから「（国王から）お触れを出す」という考えから来たものでもある。それは私のデザインにはいつも王族らしさとか気高さ、尊厳や威厳といったテーマが含まれてもいるから。コンセプトは王族らしさから始まって、自分の着ているものの中に自分自身の力を込めていく、そうして自分自身に対する自身も深めていくという思いもある。私自身は、I DO DECLARE を世界に対する鎧としての服、だと考えているの。

Q. What were your favorite looks from Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibit gala “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”?
Ｑ； “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”という展示会がメトロポリタン美術館でありましたけど、何か気に入ったものはありましたか？
A. Zendaya’s take on Joan of Arc, hands down and Chadwick Boseman. He was just gorgeous with the sparkles in his hair! I just did a collection based on catacomb saints and Catholic Majesty, it’s so appealing. It was fun to see the theme out in the regular world and the celebrity’s take on it. It was nice to see the museum’s collection of garments based around the theme.
Ａ：ゼンダヤの「ジャンヌ・ダルク」、「ハンズ・ダウン」そしてチャドウィック・ボーズマン。もう彼は、髪にスパークリングが入っていたりして、最高。私もカタコームの聖人たち、そしてカソリックの荘厳さというテーマでコレクションをまとめたのだけど、とても魅力的よね。普通の世界にそんなテーマを見ることができたり、セレブが興味を持って表現に参加してくれるのはとても楽しいわ。あのテーマで集められたガーメントを美術館のコレクションとして見ることができたのもよかったと思う。

Q. Can you tell me about your newest collection debuting at A-KON?
Ｑ： A-KONで発表した最新コレクションについて聞かせてください。
A. It’s inspired by “Picnic at Hanging Rock”, a 1979 movie. It’s Australian and about an Edwardian girls school taking a field trip to Hanging Rock (a natural feature that has odd magnetism). Then the girls disappear into the wilderness. It’s very mysterious and atmospheric. It’s that style of daytime, bright sunlit creepiness, and eeriness. You can see everything, it’s a gorgeous day, but there is something terribly wrong. I love that feeling, so I wanted to create a collection based on that. I have a bunch of white and black Edwardian inspired dresses.
Ａ：あれは、1979年公開の映画「ピクニックatハンギング・ロック」（制作は1975年）にインスピレーションを得ているの。オーストラリアの話で、1900年代初頭、エドワード朝時代の女学校の生徒たちがハンギング・ロックという場所にピクニックに出かけるの（その場所には不思議な磁力があるという設定）。そこで少女たちが次々と自然の中で行方不明になっていく。とてもミステリアスで雰囲気のある映画なのよ。昼日中、とても明るい太陽光に照らし出された気持ち悪さ、気味の悪さがそこには存在する。光が当たっているから、何でも見えるのよ、とてもすばらしい天気で、でもどこかとてもおかしな、変な感じがするの。私はその変な感じが好きなのね。その感覚をもとにコレクションを作ろうと考えたの。それでエドワード朝を思わせるようなドレス、それも白と黒というはっきりした色合いのドレスを人そろえ作り上げたわけ。

Q. In the past you had collaborations with Voodooodolly and Haenuli. Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?
Ｑ：過去には「Voodooodolly」や「Haenuli」とコラボしたこともあったけど、将来誰か、コラボしたいと思っている人はいますか？
A. I would like to do a collaboration with Apatico, a Seattle based harness, accessories, and headwear designer. She started as a strict milliner and has since expanded. I love all her pieces and would like to do something with her sometime.
Ａ：「Apatico」とぜひコラボレーションしてみたい。シアトルを本拠地にしている装具やアクセ、髪飾りのデザイナーさん。最初は婦人帽子職人として始めたデザイナーなんだけど、それからずいぶん手を広げている。彼女の作るものはすべて好きになってしまう。だからいつか、いっしょに何かやりたいなと思っているの。

Q. Is there any food you want to try while you are here in Texas?
Ｑ：テキサスにいる間に、食べておきたいなと思う食べ物はありますか？
A. I definitely need to have some barbecue; there is not really any good barbecue in New York. I’m definitely going to make it a point to go get some delicious barbecue!
Ａ：バーベキューは絶対ものよね。ニューヨークには本当においしいバーベキューはないのよ。絶対に超絶おいしいバーベキューを予約して食べに行くんだ！

Q. What is one thing you cannot leave home without?
Ｑ：これなしでは家を出られない、というものは何かありますか？
A. I cannot get dressed without pockets. I have to have pockets in everything. I put pockets in all my dresses. I like being able to put things in my pockets and going, so I don’t have to worry about having a bag matching or banging into people.
Ａ：ボケットなしの洋服を着ることができないの。どんなものにもポケットがないとダメなのね。自分の作るドレスにも全部ポケットを付けてる。ポケットに何か入れて、それから出かけるのが好きなのね。そうしておけば似合いのバッグを持たなきゃとか、誰か人とぶつかったりしないかしらと心配することもないじゃない。
