Sometimes destiny puts people in your path, and they come back to your life or become important when you least expect it. That is what happened with Atelier Dulcinea’s founder and designer Yessica and me. We met in college, where I was her senior and we didn’t know each other very well, but I have always admired her style, then influenced by retro and pin-up fashion. Truth be told, I never imagined I would find her at a Lolita High Tea Party with Misako Aoki, but I was glad to see I wasn’t the only fashion designer interested in the frills and prints of lolita fashion.
時として人々は運命に導かれるようにあなたの人生に現れます。そしてそのことを少しも気にしていないときに、そういった人々があなたの人生に舞い戻ってきたり、大切な人になったりします。それがアトリエ・ダルシネアの創設者そしてデザイナーであるジェシカと私の間に起こったことです。私たちは大学生の時に知り合いました。その時は私の方が先輩で、二人の間柄はそんなに深いものではなかった。それでも彼女のレトロっぽいスタイルやピンアップファッションに影響されたスタイルを私はカッコいいなと思っていました。そして本当に、そんな彼女と青木美沙子さんも参加してくれたロリータ・ハイ・ティーパーティーで見つけるなんて思ってもいないことでした。ロリータファッション、フリルとプリントに魅せられたデザイナーは私だけじゃなかったんだと、その時私はすごく嬉しかったのを覚えています。

Over a year has passed since then and it feels like a lifetime. Now we are close friends, brought together by our love of alternative fashion, and she is my constant companion to almost every event in the city. “As an alternative fashion lover and designer, I already knew Lolita visually, but I never considered using it. It wasn’t because I didn’t like it, it was because I considered it was too difficult to buy in Mexico and that no one would understand what I was wearing.” She remembers as a grin graces her lips. “And then I went to Japan.”
それから1年あまり。でもすごく時間が経ったような気がします。私たちはとても近しい友達になり、オルタナティブ・ファッションへの愛を分かち合うようになり、この街で行われるほぼすべてのイベントに一緒に行く用になりました。「オルタナティブ・ファッションの愛好者、デザイナーとして、ロリータのことは昔から見て知っていたの。でも自分で着ようとは思っていなかった。それはそれが嫌だったからではなくて、メキシコでは買えないと思ったのがひとつ、そしてそれを着ていることを誰も理解してくれないだろうと思ったことが大きな原因だったの。」彼女はそんな風に考えていたらしい。そして口元に笑みを浮かべる。「だから私は日本に行ったのよ。」

The trip was very revealing for her and it shows when she talks about it, the enthusiasm showing in her voice. “When I arrived, the first thing I bought was a dress by Alice and the Pirates. I didn’t even figure out my lodging. I just couldn’t help myself.”
I can tell she was surprised, but happy, as she continues with her story, as a complete outsider submerged suddenly in the romanticism and lace of the fashion. “I knew nothing of brands, of rules…but what I did know is that my heart raced as I entered stores such as Closet Child or even Bodyline. It was like a fairytale.”
その旅は彼女に多くのことを教えてくれた。それは彼女がその旅のことを話しているところを見ればわかる。声から彼女の熱が伝わる。「日本に着いてすぐ、私はAlice and the Piratesのドレスを買ったわ。どこに泊まるかも決める前にね。それくらい自分を抑えられなかったのよ。」
びっくりしただろうことは想像がつく。でも彼女は幸せだっただろう。彼女の話が続く。全くのよそ者として、このファッションのフリルとロマンティシズムの真っただ中に行ってしまったのだから。「私はブランドのことも全く知らず、ルールも分かっていなかった。でも、クローゼット・チャイルドやボディーラインといったショップに入っていったときに自分の心がワクワクしてくるのを抑えられなかった、これだけが頼りだった。本当におとぎ話の世界に迷い込んだみたいだと思ったのよ。」

Back in Mexico, she had a firm idea in her mind: she had to know more. Determined, she decided to join the local community and give the enchanting lolita clothes her own personal touch, creating her own indie brand.
“It wasn’t easy, at first. The first Tea Party I attended was very big and I knew no one, I wasn’t sure my outfit was appropriate but I had a lot of fun and the other attendees were nice and welcoming.”
メキシコに戻るころには彼女の心は決まっていた。もっと知りたい。そう決心した彼女は地元のロリータコミュニティに参加し始め、それだけでも魔法のようなロリータの服に彼女の個性的なタッチをくわえ、自分自身のインディブランドを立ち上げてしまったのだ。
「最初は、簡単ではなかったわ。初めて参加したティーパーティーはとても大きなもので、私は誰も知っている人がいなかった。自分の着ている服がその場にあっているかどうかも分からなかった。でもとても楽しくて、他の参加者の人たちはいい人たちばかりで、私を温かく迎えてくれた。

The tea party she is talking about is the “Reunión Lolita & Boystyle Nacional”, which had a head designer from Atelier Pierrot, Yuko Ashizawa as a featured guest, many local indie brands, contests and more.
“Little by little, I got to know the Mexican community, I made valuable friendships and my brand have received a lot of support.”
彼女が参加したティーパーティーは「ナショナル・ロリータ＆ボーイスタイルのリユニオン」と銘打たれたイベントで、アトリエピエロの芦沢裕子さんも特別ゲストとして、保あの地元のインディブランドのデザイナーたちと参加してくれていたものだ。
「少しずつ、メキシコのロリータ・コミュニティのことが分かってきて、とても大切な友人たちにも恵まれ、私のブランドもいろいろ助けてもらえるようになったの。」」

“Atelier Dulcinea is a recent project where I intend to make this hobby my job. Since I am a fashion designer this was my goal, to begin with, but I am happy to finally have found a place where my designs can be as feminine as I always wanted. Having my own brand has always been my dream.”
「アトリエ・ダルシネアは最近のプロジェクトで、自分の趣味的な活動をちゃんと仕事にしようと始めたものです。私はファッションデザイナーで、まだ自分のゴールへの第一歩です。でも自分の場所を持てたこと、私のデザインが望んでいたとおりに女性的であり続けていけること、それがとてもうれしいの。自分のブランドを立ち上げることはずっと私の夢でしたから。」

She says she gets asked a lot why she decided to create a brand of something so specific, since the global casual trend right now is more minimalist, and to many of us who wear some sort of alternative style, boring. “It’s because Lolita fashion has magic! Making common clothes for common situations, it is not right for me. With this style we give life the necessary touch of magic and beauty, making us happier, more creative, even.”
When asking about what inspires her, her love of fantasy is the place where all ideas come from. “My designs are always inspired by magical creatures or empowered mythological characters, transporting those who wear it into that dreamy realm.”
なぜそんな特別なファッションのブランドを作ろうと決めたのか。彼女はよくそうやって聞かれるそうです。世界中のカジュアルウェアの流れは、よりミニマルなファッションを目指している。だけど、オルタナティブ・ファッションを好む私たちの多くは、その流れがつまらないものだと思っているのです。「ロリータ・ファッションは魔法よ。一般的な服を一般的な状況のために作るのは私らしくないわ。ロリータのスタイルなら、人生に必要なマジカルで美しい感動を与えることができる。自分たちを幸せにして、もっとクリエイティブになれるのよ。」
何が彼女にとってインスピレーションになっているの、と聞かれると、彼女はファンタジーを愛することがアイデアの源泉と答える。「私のデザインはいつも、魔法の国の生き物や力を与えられた神話の世界の登場人物にインスピレーションをもらっている。それを着る人たちを魔法の国に連れて行ってあげたいのよ。」

“I was also inspired, in a more literal manner, by other local indie brands. The Mexican brands inspired me, helping me take my first steps following their example, and it made me happy to know there are so many giving their talent and creativity so our local community can grow and shine in the international scene. Their work and tenacity motivate me to move forward with this project only them can understand.”
「それから地元のインティのブランドからもインスピレーションを受けている。メキシコのブランドにインスピレーションを感じたわ。彼らの後を追っていくことですごく助けてもらった。そこにたくさんの人たちが才能を集め、クリエイティブな力を結集しているんだって知ることが私を幸せにしてくれたし、地元のコミュニティもどんどん育つことができて、国際的な舞台でも輝くことができる。彼らの仕事、粘り強さが私をこのプロジェクトで前に進ませてくれる。それが理解できるのは彼らだけよ。」

Her first collection is classic lolita, floral motifs shown in different colors, each embodying mythical beings living in a magic forest: the Swan, the Fairy, the Princess, the Witch and the Nymph. The variety of color is there to give versatility, considering some people would like to wear it in a sweeter or more gothic style.
And for the new collection, previewing for the first time in this article, she wanted to explore the darker side of Atelier Dulcinea, using the gothic style, inspired mythic characters Lilith and Medusa, traditionally shown as villains and now representing powerful, defiant women.
I am positive Atelier Dulcinea will be like a breath of fresh air for Latinamerican indie brands, and her quality and creativity be known locally and abroad. The future ahead looks like a fairytale for both Yessica and her brand.
彼女が最初に手掛けたコレクションはクラシック・ロリータだった。花柄がモチーフで、いろいろな色彩に彩られ、ひとつひとつに魔法の森に棲んでいる神話的な生き物があしらわれていた。それは白鳥であったり、妖精であったり、王女様や魔法使い、そして精霊であったりする。様々な色彩は多様性を与え、中にはもっとスイートに着たい、ゴシックに着たいと思う人々のことを考えている。
そして新しいコレクションは、もちろん初めてこの記事でお披露目するものだが、彼女はアトリエ・ダルシネアのダークサイドを開拓しようとしている。ゴシックなスタイルを使い、神話の中の登場人物リリスとメデューサにインスパイアされているが、昔で言えば、彼女たちは悪役、だけど今、彼女たちは力強く、大胆な女性たちを代表しているのだ。ジェシカのクリエイティブな力と品質はこれで地元でも海外でも知られることになると思う。彼女の前に広がる未来は、彼女にとってそして彼女のブランドにとって、本当におとぎ話のようになるだろう。
